Queen shares joke with Aussie swimmer Thorpe

Australian swimming hero Ian Thorpe has received words of comfort from the Queen after a bout of bronchitis forced him to pull out of the Commonwealth Games.

And the Queen, who officially opened the 18th Games in Melbourne, was even able to share a joke with the 23-year-old Thorpedo, saying of his enforced absence: "At least you're giving someone else a chance."

The five-times Olympic gold medallist, who is renowned for his size 17 feet, said: "She said to me 'I hear you have been unwell, it's unfortunate you can't compete'. When I told her I had bronchitis, she said 'viruses are horrible'."
